Meningitis is an infection of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord that is caused by a virus or bacteria. Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection that must be treated with antibiotics. Some forms of bacterial meningitis can be avoided altogether with the Hib vaccine.
